Lenten Events in 2013
Sacrament of Reconciliation (Every Saturday | Church)
We experience the forgiving love of God in this Sacrament available every Saturday during Lent from 4:00pm - 4:45pm and Monday, March 25th from 3:00pm - 9:00pm.
Parish Retreat (March 11 - 13 | 7:30pm | Church)
So many times, Jesus would go to a special, quiet place to pray. During this Lent, accept the invitation from Jesus to do the same — to spend some special time in prayer. We gather as a Parish family for a special Lenten Retreat. Father Lou Sogliuzzo, a Jesuit Priest, will be our Director. In addition to the 7:30pm Service, Fr. Lou will speak each morning following the 9:00am Mass in the Church.
Lenten Family Night (March 1 | 6:30pm - 7:30pm | The Abbey)
How does your family observe Lent and Holy Week? Join us for a special evening focusing on helping children (and all of us) understand the special season of Lent and the special happenings of Holy Week. A craft will be part of the evening. Registration is required and a $5.00 fee per family (to cover the craft) will be collected at the door. Contact the Faith Formation Office for more information and to register at (516) 679-9558.
Stations of the Cross and Special Presentation
A long standing tradition of Lenten prayer is the Stations of the Cross. These are offered on Fridays at 7:00pm in the Church. There are many different settings of the stations and we invite you to experience them as various groups lead us in prayer. On March 1st, in lieu of Stations of the Cross we are offering “Journey, Cross and Crucifixion” beginning at 8:00pm. This beautiful dramatic representation of Jesus’ passion is brought to us by the very talented Creative Ministries team.
Soup Supper (March 10 | 6:00pm | The Abbey)
During the season of Lent, we grow closer to God with the actions of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. One event that offers us a clear reminder of these is our annual Soup Supper. We share each other’s company, a simple meal of soup and bread, pray together and then offer what we have collected to benefit a worthy cause.
The Singers of Long Island (March 20 | 7:00pm | Church)
We once again welcome the extraordinary Singers of Long Island (S.O.L.I.), a group of professional singers who have performed extensively throughout Long Island. The program will begin with the singing of “Requiem” by Herbert Norman Howells (1892-1983), followed by Sacred selections from Aaron Copeland and other well-known composers.
Sharing and discussing our Sunday Scriptures helps bring us closer to the message that the Liturgy of the Word offers us each week during Lent. Join Deacon John Lynch at 7:30pm on Feb. 28th (in the Large Abbey); on March 14th (Small Abbey); and March 21st (Rectory Basement) to prayerfully discuss the upcoming Sunday Scriptures. Sister JoAnn Bonauro will lead a morning group on Thursday, February 28th, March 14th and March 21st, in the Small Abbey.
