FAQS (Frequently asked questions about the Nocturnal Adoration)

When is Nocturnal Adoration?

On every 3rd Saturday from 11:00pm to 7:00 am Sunday morning Nocturnal Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is conducted.

Do you pray for 8 hours?

No.  The time is divided into 8 groups.  Each group is present with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament for one hour.  The groups rotate each month watching the next successive hour.  Reminder postcards are sent out monthly so people will know what time their group comes. Our yearly is schedule is available and also appears on the parish website.

Does everybody follow the schedule?

No.  Some people cannot come during the late night or early morning hours and choose to come only at the 11pm to 12:00 or the morning watch at 6am to 7am.  There is an announcement in the church bulletin the week before Nocturnal Adoration.

Is the Nocturnal Adoration Society only for men?

NO!

The NAS (Nocturnal Adoration Society) was first organized in Rome in 1810 and it quickly spread to France.  In 1840 a Jewish convert who became a Carmelite priest, complained that he was “put out” of the chapel in France because women spent the night in prayer and so began Nocturnal Adoration in France.  In 1882, the first NAS was started in Boston by a French professor and grew to 600 centers.

What about now?

NAS now has over 115,000 members.  But NAS has grown in other ways besides members, we know that Jesus supports the family and all of its members.  St. William’s NAS encourages all parishioners: Teenagers, Women and Men to come to adore the Blessed Sacrament.  Some come as families some with friends. Two of our group leaders are women.   All are invited to come and ask God if He will use us to do His will.

What do we actually do during the hour?

1  We are led by the group leader in public prayer.  Each person receives a book (The Office of the Blessed Sacrament) which contains the prayers, psalms and readings.

2  There is also plenty of time for private meditation and prayer during the hour.

What if I cannot come on a certain night?

We do have a responsibility to be sure that the Blessed Sacrament is not alone but, that aside, it would not be a problem.

Can I attend without making a commitment or joining a group?  Yes, come at any hour between 11pm and 7am on the 3rd Saturday.  If you feel that God has called you to ”come and worship” print your name and phone number in the book at the entrance of the chapel.

Or: Call Bill Markland at 516-826-0394

Once again:  Nocturnal Adoration is an organization of Catholics dedicated to the greater love and honor of our Lord present and active in the Blessed Sacrament.
